Ditshego Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)

The Rotary Club of Centurion is proud to be part of an innovative project at the Ditshego
Centre — combining food security, sustainability, and community empowerment. With the
support of our members and international partners, the Black Soldier Fly Larvae (BSFL)
project has officially taken flight!

What’s Happening at Ditshego?

Chicken Coop

To create a sustainable food system, we relocated the chicken coop under shady pecan nut
trees, laid a brand-new hygienic floor, and installed commercial nesting boxes. We then
introduced 12 healthy Hy-Line hens — who are already producing eggs for the community!

The star of the show is the BSFL composting system, installed earlier this year. This
amazing setup transforms food waste into protein-rich feed for the chickens, while also
producing nutrient-dense compost for the garden. It’s nature’s recycling at its best turning waste into wellness.

Community Involvement

House mothers and staff at Ditshego have been trained to run the system themselves —
learning how to care for the larvae, feed the chickens, and use the compost in the gardens.
This means the project is not only environmentally friendly but also empowering for the
community, providing skills that last a lifetime.

What’s Next?

We’re now entering the pilot phase, where the first full BSFL cycle will be managed on-site.
This is the exciting moment where all the pieces come together: waste management, food
security, and sustainable farming — powered by Rotary and driven by community passion.
Our hope is that this project will become a model of sustainable living that can be
replicated elsewhere. Every small step here makes a big difference — for the environment,
for families, and for future generations.

Rotary Centurion Food Aid

We are all aware that many people who live from paycheque to paycheque or day-to-day income are now without work over and above the existing 30% unemployment rate in our country. Thousands of people in our broader community are now starving. This is leading to a whole host of other social, safety and security issues.

The Rotary Club of Centurion has embarked on a feeding scheme that will assist these desperate people in our local community and we are appealing to you for help.

We are able to provide a meal for a family of 6 for R10, that includes rice, dried vegetables and lentils.

You could assist in a few ways:

  • You can assist in procuring items and packing bags, using the easy to follow instructions – a great family project!

Youth Conference 2019 – Friday 1 and Saturday 2 MARCH 2019

Youth development is a key focus area for Rotary International.  Every year, the Rotary Club of Centurion organizes a 2-day Youth Conference for senior learners of various schools in Northern Gauteng. The 2019 Conference will be held at Cornwall Hill College (Centurion) on Friday  1 and Saturday 2 March 2019

The format of the event is that over the two days learners hold group discussions on a set subject. Each discussion group consist of ten learners, each from a different school and from widely varying social and cultural/religious backgrounds. Only the learners themselves can participate in the discussions, though we provide monitored supervision during the discussion.

These discussions are interspersed with short talks by motivational speakers and fun activities for the learners.

We invite schools to select ten (10) learners each to represent the school at the event and et us know by mid-October of your participation.

Youth Conference The attendance is free of charge and we provide for the necessary catering.  Transport arrangements to site will however have to be organized by yourselves. There is no sleep over accommodation and learners will need to transported to and from the event each day.

We hope to have commitments again from the following schools for 10 learners each.

  • Edenvale High
  • Lyttelton Manor High School
  • Beauileiugh Collage
  • Pro Arte School Pretoria
  • Steve Tshwete Secondary School
  • and many more…

Off to Germany

Our Youth Exchange program is running.

Though this year we had only one exchange student, Jennifer Wulfes from Germany.

She was hosted here by the Meissners-Roloffs from Hennopspark during July/August.

When not traveling, she attended Zwartkop Hoer, in full school uniform (a strange  experience for European students).

And she left speaking a smattering of Afrikaans.

Her exchange partner, Lara, will leave for Germany on the return part of the exchange end of next month and enjoy a winter vacation in Europe. Hopefully with more snow than rain!

When she comes back in January Lara will show us a picture of Christmas celebrations in Germany

Mooiplaas Kids Christmas party

Every year The Rotary Club of Centurion give the children of 3 of the day care centers in the area a Christmas Party. The community of Mooiplaas consists of extremely poor people living without the most basic of necessities.

The children are all between the ages of 2 months – 6 years. We are expecting +/- 150 children. These children are taken care of daily by 7 very special ladies who work on a volunteer basis. No allowances are paid to them for the work they do.

We registered around 230 people, majority very young kids. It was mayhem when the kids of an entire creche arrived, about 45 of them: lots of screaming and crying, very high noise levels but eventually things proceeded smoothly and more quietly. It was VERY hot but luckily there was a constant gusty breeze blowing.

We had some welcome help from 3 little youngsters who were so keen to actually be involved. Various mobile stations were set up for family planning advice, TB and HIV testing, blood pressure, blood sugar etc… It was overall an interesting and good experience which ended in me and Marilyn giving 7 young boys a 100m lift in my bakkie!!! Still don’t know how they all fitted in!

At the meeting on Thursday the 5th of June, 2014, it was agreed to accept the kind offer from Irene Country Club (ICC) to accommodate us going forward for meetings and other activities.

To get there, you enter into the club property at the main gate (off Main Road). Proceed right to the end of the parking area (past the main clubhouse). At the end of the parking area turn left down the narrow lane past the bowling green. Immediately after the bowling green, turn left and proceed down the lane with the bowling green and tennis courts on your left and cricket field on you right. At the end of the lane, the cricket pavilion is on your right. Parking is available there.

Changing Lives, Touching Tomorrow

Our second youth conference, “Changing Lives, Touching Tomorrow” was conducted with a resounding success!

The success was made possible with the support of Cornwall Hill College in providing us with a fantastic venue and competent students who took on the role of facilitators. The role of the facilitators in the event is key. Cornwall Hill College’s Social Responsibility Director, Mrs Wendy Barrett coached and guided the facilitators through the delicate art of facilitating a peer group and Rotarian Marilyn Traugott guided them with pointers in handling different cultures. Our relationship with Cornwall Hill College is of huge value to our Club.

Catering for 158 busy students was a task that was ably handled by the Rotarians and their spouses. The Saturday Lunch was sponsored Steers, Highlands Centre and the Rotarians got stuck in flipping the burgers. Vegetarian options were also available and the food was enjoyed by all.

Dala, KV Art Materials (Pty)Ltd , K Craft Imports (Pty) Ltd and Mr Price were our sponsors for the stationery and creative materials. Lovely expressive art work was created!

As before, the feedback from the delegates was very positive. They loved being able to interact with people they did not know before and express themselves freely in an environment they found comfortable.

Some of the comments:

“Meeting new people, this was very wonderful. I wish I can come back!”

“The idea of the talking stick was truly out of this world and I’m going to do it at school.” “The change you wish to create needs to begin from within yourself.”

“I learnt that serving people can actually change my perspective about life.”

  • Al Ghazali College
  • Amity International School
  • Cornwall Hill College
  • Hoërskool Eldoraigne
  • Malatse Motsepe High School

Tshwaranang Day Care Centre

Rotary Centurion has procured a donation of a used shipping container which we intend to place at the Tshwaranang Day Care Centre, at the Mooiplaas settlement. Mooiplaas is situated behind Sunderland Ridge in Centurion, Gauteng.

The intention is to use the container as a little kitchen and store room for the 40+ underprivileged children who are taken care of daily at the centre.

Our plan is to relocate the donated container and then do some modifications, such as installing some windows and a door into the container for starters, as well as flooring and other fittings.

Following a site visit last Saturday to see where we were going to place the container, we have requested that the community start clearing the site. We have obtained a quote to move the container and we are now urgently seeking a sponsor for this – we need to transport the container from Johannesburg to the site in Centurion by mid-August.

We are also looking for sponsors and/or assistance with the modifications and installations.

Have a look at our Facebook page for some photos: www.facebook.com/rotarycenturion

Please contact us if you are able to assist in any way.

Blankets distributed

Following on from the June blanket drive, the Rotary Club of Centurion distributed 417 blankets, valued at R20850.00, to needy beneficiaries in the greater Centurion and Tshwane area.

Beneficiaries included The Turning Point, Mooiplaas community, L&J community, Centurion Hospice, and Moeg Gesukkel settlement.

Our sincere thanks to everyone who supported this initiative!
